Thoughts on the DESERT

January/February 2023

The desert is exactly like they say: A peaceful oasis. I felt noticeably safe by myself and despite it being winter, I even got a sun-tan. The desert also has the most expensive gas I’ve seen on the road so far…

Escondido, California: Unbeleivable and on my list of places to return. It’s a small meditation-friendly town; A peaceful place.

Lake Havasu, Arizona: Still one of my favorite finds. I’m not sure why, but I feel peaceful when I’m there. While passing through this time, I accidentally popped a tire. I drove to the nearest tire shop (5 miles away) but learned why you’re not supposed to drive on a flat. Oops. It turns out I made the problem worse and needed to buy a new tire. Luckily, I found a great mechanic to help and was back on the road the next day.

Joshua Tree National Park: Reminds me of Dr. Seuss and The Lorax. It’s an odd place where funky trees grow. Sort of anti-climactic.

Amboy Crater: Super isolated in nature. Apparently, Amboy Crater is the youngest crater to hit Earth and it made for a cool, dog-friendly hike.

Death Valley National Park: Mind-blowing. I needed more time (and no dog) to get the full experience, but I now understand how and why Star Wars has filmed there. It reminds me of Mars. The crazy winds and sand storms were unexpected and shook the mini van all night long. It was a great experience.

Hoover Dam: Although crowded, it was another beautiful pit stop. After visiting, I drove 5 miles into a nearby canyon and found an epic (free) camping spot. It was isolated but still had cell service (essential for working!) I woke up in the middle of the night to a wild donkey at my site. Apparently they can be very dangerous; It was cool.

While in the desert, I’ve been focused on being present in the moment. Despite struggling with time management, It’s been a grounding and rewarding experience. I had to skip a few key National Parks because of weather, but am already daydreaming about returning.
