Since the 1970’s, several studies have been dedicated to the differences between a boss and a leader, with more than 4,000 documented definitions of leadership existing. However, no scientific evidence exists to support the differences between management and leadership.

What’s the noticeable difference?
According to Forbes, Bosses tend to rely heavily on external controls. Almost forcing people to do what they don’t want to do in order to get what’s needed. On the other hand, leaders show their people what’s in it for them when they repeatedly contribute quality work.

Leaders provide vision, inspiration, and support for their people. Bosses provide the resources and expect results. Zaleznik (1977) suggests that leaders develop fresh approaches to problems with an open mind where managers tend to act to limit choices. Whilst leaders inspire the purpose, managers are usually more concerned about procedures, policies, and structure (Bennis 1989). The main role of the leader is to set a new direction for a group. However, managers focus on control, guarantee discipline, and introduce order according to established principles (Schumpeter 1934).

A 2015 Gallup poll of 7,272 U.S. adults found that at some point in their career, one in two had left their job because of their manager. Only one in three people are engaged at work, and managers account for at least 70% of the variance in employee engagement scores.
