Istanbul, Turkey

Istanbul was never on my bucket list, but after traveling around Europe for a few months, I realized it should be.

You need a visa to travel from the EU into Turkey, and it takes roughly 48 hours to process. We booked our trip less than 72 hours before leaving and had no issues buying our visa with our ticket. We were just in time.

A weekend trip to Istanbul offers a wide range of experiences and attractions for tourists. Here are some activities and sights to consider:

Historic Sites and Landmarks

Discover Istanbul’s rich history by visiting iconic landmarks: the Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, Blue Mosque, and the Basilica Cistern. These sites are packed with tourists but offer a glimpse into Istanbul’s past and architectural marvels. You can visit them all in one day. Be mindful of conservative dress codes to enter the Mosques. Some require closed toed shoes and head coverings before entering.

Grand Bazaar

Wander through the Grand Bazaar and lose yourself in the vibrant atmosphere of one of the world’s oldest and largest covered markets. This market is a fascinating place to shop for spices, textiles, ceramics, jewelry, and souvenirs. We almost got pickpocketed by a grandma, so watch out for thieves!

Bosphorus Cruise

Pay 12 Turkish Lira ($0.50) for a scenic cruise along the Bosphorus Strait, which divides Istanbul between Europe and Asia. Technically, this Turkish city spans two continents. Enjoy breathtaking views of the city’s skyline, Ottoman palaces, and historic neighborhoods.

Spice Bazaar

Different from the Grand Bazaar, the Spice Bazaar (Egyptian Bazaar) immerses you in incredible aromas and flavors. Sample the famous Turkish delight and browse a variety of spices, dried fruits, nuts, and other culinary delights. Even if you don’t buy anything, the market has a unique energy.

Explore the Asian Side

Take the ferry across the Bosphorus to explore Istanbul’s Asian side. Kadikoy and Uskudar are popular neighborhoods where you can experience a different side of the city. These areas are full of vibrant markets, local restaurants and bars, live music, and picturesque waterfront promenades. I would consider it more authentic than the European side.

Turkish Bath Experience

Experience a traditional Turkish bath, known as a hammam. These historic bathhouses offer a unique opportunity to relax, cleanse your body, and indulge in a traditional bathing ritual. Although we did not have time to experience a Turkish Bath, they appear similar to a spa.

Istanbul’s Nightlife

Istanbul has a vibrant nightlife scene. Explore the trendy districts of Beyoglu and Istiklal Avenue, where you’ll find a variety of bars, clubs, live music venues, and rooftop bars offering stunning views of the city. Like any city, as long as you stay aware and stick with the crowd, safety should not be an issue.

Remember, this is just a glimpse of what Istanbul has to offer. Stay safe and have fun
