Mexico

My Favorite Destination

What started as a spontaneous two-week backpacking trip turned into an unexpected journey that reshaped my life. This decision led me through two and a half years of exploration in Latin America ; A slow and beautiful process of rediscovering myself and my life expectations.

Mexico surprised me not just with its stunning landscapes, vibrant culture, and generous people. It opened my heart in ways I didn’t expect. I arrived timid but curious, and left with a clearer sense of self, meaningful connections, and a newfound respect for a country that often gets misunderstood.

Mexico City was my first real taste of the country. When I landed, I was hit with culture shock like never before. It was the first place I’d traveled solo where I didn’t know the language. It felt daunting as a 5’2″ blonde woman, but I quickly found my routine. My days were filled with work at the Selina co-working space, friendly chats at the coffee shop, and spontaneous afternoon outings.

I met people from all over the world: locals whose unexpected warmth renewed my faith in humanity, fellow female travelers whose bravery inspired me, and an Argentinian guy whose impact deserves a story all its own.

Sure, Mexico has its share of misconceptions, but in my opinion, those stereotypes are misfit. Like any other country, it has its dangers and struggles, but the people are resilient, family orientated, and welcoming. I once complimented a waitress on her earrings, and she was so touched that she offered to give them to me as a gift, right off her ears.

Mexico is also a popular gastronomic location. Oaxaca is a famous culinary fantasy known as the “Land of the Seven Moles.” People flock to this region from all over the world to try its authentic flavors, unique cooking methods, and traditional mezcal. I spent days wandering the cobblestone streets, discovering new museums, cafes, shops, and so much more. My favorite street food joint, Tacos Del Carmen, even made it onto Netflix.

On the Oaxacan west coast lies the breathtaking Puerto Escondido. This Mexican beach town is still primarily untouched by international tourism. The beaches are not only famous for their stunning horizon, ocean front sunsets, but they are also among the cleanest I’ve ever walked.  No shells, rocks, or seaweed to step on; Just pure, golden sand stretching for miles. I would stroll for hours along the coastline, captivated by the biggest waves I’ve ever seen. Pausing to watch the occasional surfers or extreme swimmers.

Whether it’s the city, beach, or mountains, Mexico offers breathtaking landscapes and unique experiences no matter where you go. It attracts brave, open-minded travelers who are hunting for a raw experience.

Travel is essential to learning and growing. A brief trip can transform your entire life. For me, Mexico wasn’t just the start of a trip ; it marked the beginning of a new purpose.  It opened my eyes, redirected my journey, and warmed up my passport for future adventures.
